I have tried to send a private message on this topic several times to Dr.
Hale on this topic and mail keeps bouncing. Dr. Hale, do you or anyone
else have info on the effects of ativan (lorazepam) used to allow women to
sleep with long prodromal labors. I have checked several sources. My
understanding is that diazepam (Valium), is generally contraindicated for
its potential to cause excessive hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn, but I
can't find out if the same concern applies to ativan. I was very surprised
to find that a physician I know uses this drug for that purpose rather
frequently, especially as I have taught that morphine is usually the best
medication if one really needs to use a med in this situation.
