Judy,
I recently have worked with a couple who went to China to adopt a baby girl
of uncertain age. She is thought to be about 4-5 months old. The mother,
who had previously lactated, brought in some milk. When she first got the
baby, baby was really sick with a respiratory infection. Baby was
exhauseted, and went to breast and nursed some. However, since then she has
refused. Mother has tried shield, feeding tube device, skin-to-skin. I
attemped to assist on one office visit and baby has cried hysterically at
all attempts. I suggested getting into tub and trying re-birthing. Haven't
talked to them in a week or so, but will to find out if re-birthing worked.
This baby had been through so much, so many losses, it would be lovely to
bring her to breast. But babies over 3 months have opinions and express them
strongly. I have heard others say and it fits with my own experience that
the younger the baby the greater the chances baby will go for it.
