Jeane biliary atresia means that the bile duct is missing or blocked,
causing bile to back-up in the liver. This causes hyperbili and scars the
liver. It also causes poor digestion of fats because of decreased or absent
bile. It begins at about 1 week and the only cure I know of is transplant.
Another type - extrahepatic biliary atresia begins at about 2 weeks of age.
It is either autoimmune or post viral. Whatever the cause, breastfeeding
won't fix it. We could speculate that not BF contributes to the 2nd type,
but that won't help this mom now. With all this mom has on her plate, I
don't think it would serve any purpose to encourage her to relactate.
Linda - I'll miss your daily tee bulletins now that BF MONTH is almost over!
FYI- My daughter Laurie's surgery went pretty well. We are waiting for
final path report and decision on radiation/no radiation.
Pat Young in SNJ, waiting for the long week end off! "Never doubt that a
small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world, indeed it's the
only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead
