I work with the WIC Program in Mississippi as a WIC Breastfeeding Program
Coordinator.  ([log in to unmask])  The Special Supplemental
Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is part of the USDA
Food and Nutrition Service.  WIC provides supplemental infant formula (abm)
for eligible non-breastfeeding infants for up to one year--nationwide.  Some
things may be different in different states--i.e., some states have vouchers
where eligible individuals get their WIC foods from grocery stores;
Mississippi has a system where eligible individuals pick up a food package at
distribution centers.  Elegibility criteria and what is offered and to whom
are subject to USDA guidelines and are the same in all states.  WIC also
provides supplemental juice, cereal, cheese, milk and some other foods for
eligible infants and children and for eligible pregnant women, post-partum
breastfeeding women (up to one year for women who breastfeed for a year,
including an enhanced food package for women who breastfeed exclusively, or
who, at least, don't pick up formula from WIC for their babies), and post-
partum non-breastfeeding women for up to six months after the baby is born.
