Have felt so heartened by Pat Gima's and others' sharings (latest Katherine
Dettwyler's - wonderful!) of how it hurts when a mother you have worked with
(so hard!) decides to quit. I recently worked with a mother for whom I'd
made breastfeeding first possible, then effective and comfortable, baby was
going like a little train, who finally confronted me with the statement at
my next follow-up that she wouldn't be able to breastfeed because her
husband's tobacco crop had failed! I got the message!
But I'd be interested to hear from others the first words you *say* when
presented with these kind of "reasons" for not breastfeeding ...??? In my
astonishment and to my own disgust I heard myself blurting out, "You're
telling me that your husband's farm is more important than your BABY???"
Sorry, people, I'm only human ... And congrats to Jan Barger, isn't it
great when it does work!
