I was in the same dilemma after the birth of my second child who is now
ten months old. My OB-Gyn confirmed my view based on literature that
the pill will decrease the milk supply and would not enhance successful
breast feeding. I had the same fear about the IUD and discussed this issue
with her. I was given a literature about the IUD. It took me a lot of courage
and certainly assurance from my OB-Gyn that I will not die or end up with
a hysterectomy if I use the IUD. These things have happened in the past
and therefore are mentioned in order that the patients will be able to make
informative choices. Also the IUD was prescribed to several women who
should not have had the device. The literature will list these conditions
and other requirements before the patient can make an informed consent.
It is emphasized that the IUD should be used in monogamous relationships
to prevent much of the untoward incidents such as PID and other sexually
transmitted diseases. The OB-Gyn will
also mention this to the patient (I hope) in fact, they encourage the husband
to read the same literature because the monogamous relationship requirement
applies to both the husband and the wife. The IUD will require monitoring
by the patient for placement, and for signs and symptoms that may indicate
several untoward conditions associated with the device.
