An experienced breastfeeding mother, para 5, baby 8 weeks, called
today because she has a painful milk blister that has spread to cover
almost half the end of her nipple with quite a thick skin. An LC
lanced it for her a few days ago and then got her to pump. She said
it bled quite a bit at the time, and is no better. In fact, it is
spreading.

Her breast is becoming sore and may be going into mastitis. I have
her using hot moist compresses before feeding. She has heaps of milk
and the baby's huge weight gains sound like he is better at milk
removal than any pump. She was thinking of lancing it herself with a
sterile needle, I thought she might need more extensive intervention
from her GP. The skin appears quite thick. Any suggestions? ASAP
please.
