I have to share this for all of you whose kids are charter members of COLIC
-- the official organization for the children of LCS :-)
Emily began her 1st week of college at a small liberal arts institution
which requires all freshmen take a colloquium which examins a book from a
multi-disciplinary approach including hist., anthropology, sociology etc.
This yrs book is something about Tibet, and the prof. -- a woman economist
-- was pointing out aspects of the situation of women in this culture and
the talk drifted to how hard their lives must be without birth control. All
the girls were commiserating about how women in non-industrial societies
must constantly be pregnant.
Bless her heart, without even thinking, Emily raised her hand and said the
equivalent of "Hel-LO!" She explained that of course they were
breastfeeding, and this is nature's way of spacing births, etc. etc. She
said she talked for a minute or so and then realized that everyone was
staring at her. When she paused, there was a collective exhalation as if
they had all been holding their breath in shock. She realized what she had
said was totally new information, and was weird and rather upsetting to them.
Goodness only knows what they all made of her remarks, but naturally, I was
SO proud.
Pardon this digression. Had to tell 1100 of my closest friends.
