Hi everyone, I'm back!
Jumping in from the post in the last digest about G6PD deficiency, probably
out of context:
G6PD-deficiency is due to a recessive allele (form of a gene) on the X
chromosome, and so is found most often in males, who have only one X. In
order for a woman to have G6PD deficiency, she would have to have inherited
a copy of the allele from both mother and father.
G6PD deficiency is most common in circum-Mediterranean and Middle Eastern
Jewish populations, ranging from very low levels in European Jews to 10-40
percent in places like Morocco, Yemen, Syria, and Iraq, and reaching its
highest levels among Jews in Kurdistan, where about 70% of all males are
affected. It provides protection against malaria.
