I serve on the products committee of our hospital. When you bring a product
you want approved you better have strong support for it and it's need should
justify the cost. About a year ago I asked the committee to agree to adding
the SNS to our stock items. In exchange I recommended that we eliminate the
breast shields. We did this and I immediately had some staff complain to me
about it. Our lactation educators say they use a breast shield as their
last resort. Now I am wondering if I should have eliminated that product
after reading the note from Katherine Auerbach. What do you think? I think
our staff were using them too quickly, and if a patient really needs one it
shouldn't be during their 1-2 day postpartum stay. Feedback appreciated.
