A few days ago someone asked for materials to use for training and
working with Peer Counselor Programs in the WIC Program. This is an
excellant way to provide breastfeeding support and you will find that
coordinating a peer support program one of the most worthwhile things
you have ever done.
There are Peer Counselor Program manuals available. Several states
have developed the, others are being developed and should be available
sometime next year. You might contact your State WIC Program
Breastfeeding coordinator for information on how to locate a manual.
You can e-mail me if you do not know how to contact your state
coordinator. Some of the locations that have manuals are: Utah,
Washington DC, Indiana, Illinois, South Carolina, Buffalo, NY,
Mississippi. These are just a few states. The LLL has useful
materials for developing support groups and for training leaders also.
And, Unicef and WHO have developed materials and a training
curriculum to use with lay people.
Good luck with your peer counselor work! It really is a great way to
promote and provide support and encouragement for women to breastfeed,
in a culture and society that is so hostile towards breastfeeding.
