Excerpt from LANCET Vol 345 April 15,1995 brought to me by collegue:
Several US States have passed legislation to protect a woman's right to
breastfeed in public, but a similar bill in CA has become mired in party
plotics and the subject of uninfromed and ribald comments.
Breastfeeding has been described as obscene. Legislators have warned that
women would have to "pretty much disrobe and reveal much more than
necessary to do the job."
That the bill was killed by one vote in early April is a sad comment on how
little of the scientific data linking infant intestinal and chest infection
with bottle feeding has been reported. The evidence that a breastfed baby
may have ahigher IQ, or mother who feed their babies by bottle may have more
breast cancer has been totally overlooked.
The CA vote was along party lines, with republicans leading the oppostion.
It is a mystery how campaigners for basic family values find the
quintessential bond between mother and child "obscene".
