In our hospital we have a grant funded (from a local foundation that promotes
health amoung the underserved) breastfeeding discharge pack for our clinic
patients. It consists of a diaper bag ($4.75 at a local discount store) with
an attached button "Breastmilk it does a baby good". It cost too much to have
a bag imprinted with a breastfeeding slogan so the button was cheaper. It has
one set of reusable breast pads, a booklet in English and Spanish
"Breastfeeding is Easy" by Carlene Stockamayer (I may have misspelled that
name) a magnet with the immunization schedule and safety plugs for outlets
with our clinic logo. The whole pack is under 10 dollars per unit. Our
mothers can get breast pumps by asking to pump in the hospital - the medela
attachment used is also a manual pump. There is no formula sample. At first
the nurses were scandlaized by this as "What if something happened to the
mom. We managed to convince them that stores were open 24 hours and besides
we don't send patients home with antibiotics in case the get sick! It has
been very well received.
