Sheryl - in our polyclinics (municipal clinics that do deliveries) and in
the large government hospital in Harare there are no cots or cribs for the
babies. Babies are tucked in with their mothers for the duration of the
hospital stay. The hospitals are quite proud of their practice of "bedding
in" which they think is superior to "rooming in". The babies are delirious
about it. I have never heard anyone express any concern about mothers
rolling on babies or suffocating them. When you think about this logically
MOST of the world's babies sleep in close body contact with their mothers
and the rate of population growth in developing countries is high - so
sleeping with your baby cannot be a risk factor for child survival.

Pamela, Zimbabwe.
