I have suffered from severe migraines since childhood & had much
difficulty in pregnancy & lactation avoiding meds. The most effective
preventitive treatment for me has been Chinese arm-swinging, which I read
about in one of those natural remedy handbooks from the health food
store. Basically, you stand up and swing your arms vigorously back &
forth, about 100 times, keeping the hands loose. I started by doing this
several times a day, and now can get away w/ less. During headaches, I
do it more often. There was a face stroking procedure that went along w/
the arm swinging that I found unhelpful. I suspect the mechanism here is
drawing the blood down out of the head into the hands, much as you do in
biofeedback. I also suspect that the regular practice keeps the
circulation going.
I find an old fashioned hangover ice pack helps decrease the pain.
Using these methods, I have avoided prescription medications for two
years. While they probably won't avoid every headache, they might help &
can't hurt.
