I would appreciate your advice on the following situation. Mother
breastfeeding 7 week old baby. Mother has a severe herpes infection of both
eyes. Physician has prescribed herplex. Mother has read insert from drug
company which states that it is contraindicated in breastfeeding("causes
leukemia in rats"). I have gone through Hales book ,the CPS and AAP drug
guidelines and have found no information stating that breastfeeding is
contraindicated. Have I missed anything? I have discussed this situation
with several physicians in my area who all agree that breastfeeding should
continue. The mother has not started the treatment because of her desire to
continue breastfeeding. Apparently an alternative drug viroptic is not
available in the province. Thanks for your assistance.
