I apologize for introducing myself so late. I have been lurking Lactnet
for several months now and learning a lot from your expertise. I am a
pediatric nurse practitioner and CLE. I am responsible for the follow up
of early discharge babies in clinic if they did not receive a home visit.
The question I have for you is problem that has come up for one the the
pediatricians in our practice. He is following a mother with a 4 1/2 mo
old baby. Mom was just recently diagnosed with hyperaldosterism with
initial presentation of hypertension and hyperkalemia. Mom is undergoing
serveral tests and is currently on K supplements and antihypertensives.
Our query is what is the impact on the infant (not in terms of the mom's
meds- that aspect we feel comfortable with) but the effect of increase
aldosterone excreted in the breastmilk? Should the baby's electrolytes be
checked and if so how often? I did not any information in Lawrence's or
Riordan & Auerbach's book. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thank you.
