Hi all-
Jeanine Klaus quoted me - "Coach Smith"- in her post about freedom of speech
and expression and the "teachable moment." I completely agree with concepts
of teachable moments and the freedom to express other opinions, as most of
you already know. Free speech is all about honest disagreement and the right
to dissent.
However, the US courts have determined that free speech has limits. Hollering
"Fire" in a crowded theatre has been defined as "inciting a riot," not "free
speech." Trashing a colleague is not "free speech" - it's poor behavior or
even slander. There's a difference between taking "pot shots" at others and
working to educate, inform, and foster change.
There is a fine line between expressing honest disagreements and manipulating
an audience. Teachers and speakers know this, and politicians are masters of
this. When faced with something you disapprove of or dislike, the challenge
is to resist the temptation to criticize, and instead find a way to make
positive changes.
There are times and places and forums to use for legitimate disagreement, if
the purpose is to gain information, inform, or change opinions. Wise use of
the right forum is very beneficial to all. Misuse may not get the intended
results, and may cause harm. IMHO.
