Re: Caren's question about increasing milk supply with a double pump.
I examine diet and fluids of Mom to make sure they are asequate. It is
not enough to say "Are you eating well?" You must get a food list over 24-48
hours. I suggest that there be a small, steady intake of protein throughout
the day, including breakfast (amazing how many new moms don't eat well or
don't have an appetite). I make sure that the mom is pumping about 6 times
in 24 hours-if not, I decrease the time between pumpings rather than extend
each pumping. Kind of like what a baby would do on a growth spurt. I also
suggest to the mom that the first few days of pumping are for stimulation,
and the milk is a bonus. We don't look for an increase until at least 3 days
after we've instituted this regime. I may suggest one pumping in the middle
of the night-it depends on what the mom is able to do.
Some moms are open to the use of fenugrek tea or reglan or Brewer's
yeast-we cover the option(s) that a particular mom is open to. It is the
same for the SNS-depends on the mom.
Hope this helps. But I would think that by now you are seeing a change
or working up other options.
