Barbara and all,
I feel I need to clarify the example I gave about the mother receiving
formula from the in hospital LC. This mother had a normal delivery, no
latch-on problems, full term healthy baby. The midwife I'm referring to
always made referrals to the LC's because she didn't have the time to
spend with each mom. The LC in this case gave a case of formula to the
mom, just in case she might need it. My problem with this is, What kind
of message is she sending to the mom? The mom wasn't having any problems
with breastfeeding at all. I'm sure that this LC is the exception and
not the rule, but it is disturbing none the less. I know that sometimes
there are hard feelings between the different types of expertise
represented on Lactnet. I don't wish to add to this. I am a LLLL and
hope to sit for my IBCLC next year. I'm also pursuing a nursing degree,
and one day when I'm 50 or so I hope to be Dr. Mimi. I feel that all
levels of experience are needed as are the different backgrounds we come
from. I'm just worried when "one of our own" gives out formula when it's
NOT indicated. The formula companies don't need any help, they're doing
fine themselves. As I said in my previous post, I know that feeding the
baby is first and foremast. I also pointed out that I have used Bottles,
SNS, finger feeding, etc, when needed. I hope this clears up any
misunderstanding.
