I have recently completed the Breastfeeding Counsellor Certificate
Program through Douglas College (with, and I say this proudly for it
was no easy feat, a 96%) here in Vancouver British Columbia Canada. I
have several years experience working in SCN. Currently I work in a
pediatric rehab hospital and one of my areas of focus is with infants
and children who have been prenatally substance exposed and their
families. This hospital currently does not recommend breastfeeding
with moms who struggle with their addictions. (I am working on this,
gathering info on this topic to support breastfeeding in this
population and requesting info from my more experienced colleagues in
this field and encouraging the powers that be to avoid blanket policy
statements and look at each mom babe dyad as the unique entity that it
is). My dilemma... I am not able to get much clinical time with
breastfeeding moms in my current position (work full time outside the
home and what seems like at least that at home with my 20 month old and
my partner). I am interested in speaking with anyone in my area who
can help... either direct me to agencies needing voluteers or who are
interested in mentoring a very eager enthusiastic pro-breastfeeding
LC-wanna-be.
TIA
