Is there or does anyone have any information concerning maternal use of breathine to
prevent pre-term labor and a connection with babies that are extremely hard to wake?
After speaking with two other IBCLCs and witnessing a baby whose mother had been taking
breathine for three+ months....I am thinking that it is the breathine that may be the
culprit here. The baby I saw was a re-admit for dehydration and when asking the mother
about feeding habits, she said that baby never wakes for feedings despite her efforts to
wake her and I tried it all to wake baby but she wouldn't wake but for a few minutes
after three hours of coaxing. When baby did take breast or bottle (about every 5-6
hours after 5 days of life) baby only sucked for 4 minutes or less before returning to a
deep sleep. Good point was that the baby would suck on a finger quite well while
sleeping so I recommended SNS and fingerfeeding until mom could get a referral to IBCLC.
Any and all information on this would be appreciated. Is there a study out there
concerning breathine? Should lactation services be a routine referral for moms who have
been taking breathine to prevent pre-ternm labor?
