Hi all,
We had a patient come up from the OR-Post op lap/chole. She has a totally BF
5 month old. She asked to be put on maternity because of the private rooms
and she wanted her baby brought in as soon as possible. Everyone knew her
agenda. Before she woke from anesthsia she was given toradol. We have had
this question come up before and the pharmacy got info from the manufacturer
saying it was not recommended. I guess the discussion in the OR was well she
can just pump and dump and she has plenty of EBM to give the baby.(He wrote
an order to this affect) When she arrived on the floor she immediatly pumped
and dumped 6 oz. About an hour later her friend brought the baby in. He had
nursed before she left for hospital and all day had taken about 2 oz. all
day. It was now 1pm. I was asked to go in and try to fingerfeed this baby!!
Baby was in mom's arms and was crying and rooting like mad. Mom was upset
and asked me about what the nurse had told her about conflicting info re:
toradol. I told her that according to two sources I had it was considered
compatable. She said "So, if you two leave, and I nurse my baby, it will be
OK? " I feel bad that she had to go thru this. Why does one say it is safe
and the other say no?? And how can I get the pharmacy to O.K. it??
Jane in rainy N.H.
