More than 5 years ago a close relative gave her baby up for adoption. She
wanted very much to nurse the baby after birth so the baby would get the
colostrum, but was talked out of it by adoption agency and hospital
personnel. To this day, her greatest regret about this semi-open adoption is
that she did not nurse her baby. The adoptive mother did, incidentally,
breastfeed her. I don't know any details about the breastfeeding on the part
of the adoptive mother.
I also have a good friend who adopted premature twins. She breastfed them
for more than 2 years using a Lactaid. She was disappointed that she never
produced more than a few drops of milk at a feeding, but feels very
positively about the experience. (She later gave birth to a girl whom she
nursed for over two years.)
Hope this helps. Bonnie
