The Global Standard requirement as I understand is 75% of mothers breastfeeding at
discharge. This has seemed very daunting in the UK, and the UK UNICEF committee has
got agreement for a UK Standard, which is 50% bf at discharge. Included is a commitment to
work towards full Global status within a set time frame. I have heard that some hospitals are
finding the process a useful quality tool.
I understand another requirement is no abm money, samples, free abm etc. This is perhaps
less of a problem in the UK where for soem years now hospitals have been required to pay
commercial rates for the abm they need. The calendars, weight charts etc is another story.
I have heard someone say that if you implement the 10 steps the 75% will follow naturally. I
don't know of any evidence to support this, but pass it on for your interest.
