I've been using infant Diflucan for 6 mo. or more. The results are
excellent for oral thrush in the newborn. It comes in 10mg/ml liquid form.
Dose is based on infant weight. It is effective in about 48 hours and needs
to be given for 10-14 days - once a day, which makes administration and
compliance about 1000% easier. Nystatin - with its 4 x day administration,
allows time in between doses for yeast to replicate and if mom gets tired
and misses a dose you are almost starting over. I've seen it take 2 or 3
bottles of nystatin to get the yeasties all gone. And of course the
cardinal rule is treat mom AND baby. New info in Infectious Diseases in
Children 9(4), p.19-21 April 1996 (a newspaper) cautions that newborns<2
weeks need dose reduced by 1/3 (I think they mean to 1/3) or give full dose
q. 72 hours. Newborns (2 weeks to 4 weeks) need dose reduced by 1/2 or full
dose given every 48 hours. I'll check on that. They also discuss
resistence development. I would think that one Rx that is effective is
better than 2 or 3 that let yeast struggle along. Any thoughts on that?
