I need to share this: baby boy, 7lb 11oz at birth, good apgars,
early discharge, regained birth weight by 6 days, then jaundice
peaked 272 (just under phototherapy level). He always scraped
in with 6-8 wet nappies and yellow poops, and feed 2-3 hrly.
But he wouldn't put on weight- static weight over weeks 2-3.
By week four, I was collaborating with the GP, but he was
happy with my assessment of the baby's wellness. We used
a hand pump to express extra after feeds, and gave by spoon
then by bottle as amounts grew. Weeks 4-5, he gained total
of 9 oz, again borderline.By this stage we had dropped off
the growth chart.I was anxious, but in the light of beginning
small gains, and his smiling, focussing, and happy vocalising,
allowed a few more days before deciding about formula comps.
At the next check, he had gained 18oz in 5 days!!!! All breast
milk. He had grown in length and head circumference too. Whew.
Mum was bursting with milk, and he was pouring out urine.
The reason I'm so pleased is that this was my first lactation case,
years ago- a single young Maori mum- who commenced lactation
at 7 weeks post partum, and achieved exclusive breastfeeding.
She is now on the long road to becoming a midwife for her own
people. Her faith in breastfeeding is an important part of this.

Mary, RM IBCLC,feeling pleased at last.
