Barb,

Breastfeeding Review, May of 1992 has an article "The Ecological Impact of
Bottle-Feeding" p. 204-208, by Andrew Radford, Joint National Coordinator,
Baby Milk Action. E-mail me your address and I'll send you a copy. Also,
info from I believe Baby Milk Action (BMAC): In 1984 Ethiopia exported
10,000 tons of molasses to th UK, most of which was used for cattle food.
Jelliffe, 1978- "It would take 114 million lactation cows to replace the
milk of the women of India". Gilman, 1985- "Water for feeds and utensils
must be sterilized. It takes 200g of wood to boil one litre of water, so in
one year an artificially fed child would use up at least an extra 73 kilos of
wood". Jelliffe, 1978- "For every 3 million births (estimated annual US
birth rate) of babies who are bottle fed, 70,000 tons of tin plate are used
up in discarded baby milk tins". Rhode, 1982- "Indonesian mothers produce
over 1 billion litres of milk annually. It's estimated market value together
with savings in health costs and fertility reduction amount to US $ 520
million. This exceeds tin and coffee in monetary value, approaches that of
rubber, equals the cost of imported rice and is worth double the annual
health budget". The question that follows is "Why are industrialists who use
up vast amounts of finite energy and create polution so much wealthier than
women who conserve resources and create life and health?" So true it is.
Good-luck Barb. Have a good weekend everyone. It actually is going to be
sunny and 80's here in Chicago area. About time.
