Regarding the joint pain query, originally I responded privately thinking
that this might be a rare concern on Lactnet. After seeing the other
responses, I thought I'd commit to posting although some professionals
think what I have to say is controversial. Has your client been treated
for systemic Candidiasis? The Yeast Connection and Women by Crook 1994
describes many of the same symptoms and with her history of c/s, I'd say
there's a good chance. Pregnancy by itself is a risk factor for yeast
overgrowth. The other posts, especially the chronic tonsillitis with
antibiotic treatment, also suggest this diagnosis.
Another thought is that of Fibromyalgia. There is one really good book on
this When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away by Gail Backstrom (1995). Fibromylagia
can mimick rheumatoid arthritis, CFD, or lupus. There appears to be a
connection with the hormonal changes with breastfeeding and prostiglandin
inhibitors such as NSAIDs do help some. If the FM diagnosis checks out, I
have suggestions on how to treat without weaning.
Let me know if any of this sounds interesting. I'm interested in hearing
if other LCs/Leaders have had many moms with these complaints. As the APL
for Oregon, I get a lot of the calls when hcp have given up on a mom and
labeled her a "hypochondriac."
