Greetings!
I had one of our dietitians call the other day to say that she is working
with a mom-baby pair, and the baby has been diagnosed as having celiac sprue.
I usually pass these questions on to my co-worker and fellow lactnetter,
Arly, but she is vacationing in Canada.
Anyway, baby is a year old now, and has gone from 20 lbs to 16 lbs. Baby is
breastfeeding and on a gluten-free diet because with every addition of
certain wheat products, baby has severe diarrhea. Apparently, an older sib
had similar problems, but not as severe.
My question is, does mom need to also consume a gluten-free diet? How much
variety in foods does the baby need in addition to breastmilk, to progress in
a healthy manner? Has anyone worked with a mom like this? How do we ensure
that baby is getting everything he needs without consuming foods that cause
problems?
Thanks so much for your advice.
