This is just an anecdotal reference, but one of the mothers in my LLL Group
began having severe problems with depression when her daughter was over a
year old. The daughter slept very little at night (so neither did mom), mom
was working full-time (stressed-out, wanted to be at home, father expected
her to work), other general signs of depression, and at the end was even
becoming suicidal. She went into therapy, the doctor decided it was a
severe case of PPD complicated by all the other issues in her life. He put
her on Zoloft, which she took for approximately 9 months. By the end of
that time, her daughter was sleeping better, she had changed her work
schedule (10 hours at office, 30 at home), and her hormonal situation had
changed as well, and she was able to come off the medication.

In her case, the doctor was unconcerned about her daughter receiving the
Zoloft through the breastmilk, since she was over a year old and receiving
other foods as well. This mother went on to continue nursing until her
daughter weaned herself at around 2.5 years.

Hope this helps.
Amy
