Norm, our Medical Student sysop at UMMED, wrote this anecdote of his class
yesterday, where a question was asked re: support of a bf mother. Read and
smile..and if you want to, write to Norm ..at [log in to unmask] with
your impressions. Enjoy

"Oh, by the way Kathleen -- today in one of the small group sessions for
family medicine, the question came up "such and such a simulated patient is
considering breast feeding (she's bottle fed all her previous children).
What do you tell her?" I guess I do know more than the average med student
-- I blasted through "breast is best and here's why, find out if she has
any 'tribal support' through relatives who've breast fed, find out what she
plans to do about work, get in touch with a consultant if necessary, see if
she wants books or brochures, blah blah blah" while everyone else was still
looking fairly stunned :-) I remember thinking while I was saying it "this
is all pretty basic, others will fill in the details," but I think I said
more than the preceptor was expecting us to come up with as a group :-)"
