When I get calls from mothers complaining of fussy babies, the first thing I
check out is whether they are letting the baby finish one breast before
offering the other. Quite often timed feeds mean the baby is getting too
much foremilk (high lactose content) and not enough hindmilk. I've had
mothers tell me "it's like having a new baby" after they started letting the
baby guide the feeding. The other thing I look for is an oversupply of milk,
since the same problem arises--mum has so much milk that baby never seems to
get to the hindmilk, or doesn't get enough. After all that is looked at and
baby is still fussy, I look into allergies/sensitivities.
