USAID has published online a draft of the RFA (request for application) for
a new major international initiative on breastfeeding, maternal nutrition
and family planning. It can be downloaded from Gopher.info.usaid.gov then
USAID Procurement and business opportunities and Download available usaid
solicitations. It is RFA/P{/A/HRN-96-004. This is a large piece of work
friends and the recepient will receive the technical information that USAID
has which have hitherto been at APHA's Clearinghouse.
At first glance it seems as if this could only be a consortium approach as
there is work at the community level, facility based training, policy
change, research, issues related to evaluation and monitoring and
information management. Some of your universities and/or organizations
might be interested in looking into this. It looks like there will be a
much closer integration of what has been dispersed in "competing" grants to
competing institutions. This will be something like the BASICS consortium
where the major consulting first got together (AED, Management Sciences for
Health and John Snow) and presented a joint proposal. Hopefully something
like this will be possible because there is no way that one organization can
handle it all.
