Dear Jay:
Some of my psychiatrist pals have had good luck with Prozac but also Zoloff
(which from what I understand is more specific). The tricyclic
antidepressants are the ones that are frequently recommended for
breastfeeding mothers. You might consider contacting the national office of
Depression After Delivery to see if they have any more current information.
From what I understand, they are planning some articles in their next
newsletter on this topic. (215) 295-3994.

I don't know how serious this woman's depression is, but she might also
consider looking into some of the alternatives. High levels of complex carbs
int he diet, moderate exercise. Both of these have been found to influence
serotonin levels and decrease depression. Does she have enough help and
support? Does she have a birth experience that was traumatic or difficult?
Have other physical causes for her depression been explored--severe
disruption in sleep, anemia, hypothyroidism, allergies? These might be some
other avenues she wishes to explore.

I hope this helps.
