At the LLL Illinois Area Conference 27-28 April 1996 I attended a session about
sucking and latch-on problems. The LC that presented described a method that she
described as the only right way to bottlefeed. I am sure I am not capturing
every detail but from memory but here goes:
-hold the baby upright so the liquid isn't pouring into them; the goal is to
encourage sucking
-use a straight bottle so gravity doesn't make the flow too easy
-use a nipple that makes the baby flange their lips; perhaps a longer size than
the package size would recommend for their age
-keep enough EBM or ABM in the nipple to prevent air intake but don't tip it
farther
Diane, if you would like to contact the LC, please email privately and I will
send her name and telephone number.
