Hi Y'all,
Texas is busy again. Texas Department of Health is putting together a
proposal to include breastfeeding education into all scvhool
curriculum state wide. The current proposal is brief, and broken into
3 parts. 1. Pre-K through elementary- focus on species specific milk-
Middle School- eating healthy for good health and the lifelong impact
of breastmilk and breastfeeding
High School- integrated curriculum in anatomy, biology, life science,
health etc. focusing on the why and the how.
The proposal will be coupled with information identifying
breastfeeding as a major public health issue, including
recommendations from AAP, WHO and TDH and finish with offers for age
appropriate teaching materials available.
Has anyone had experience with or success with a proposal like this?
Are you familiar with any states that have included curriculum
requirements related to breastfeeding?
Does anyone have suggestions for things to include or ways to promote
this?
I am posting this with permission from Texas Department of Health and
will forward any repsonses that come to me in private e-mail or
posted to the list. Thanks, Cathy Liles IBCLC
