When people ask me about "the IQ thing" - which seems to push people's
buttons more than any other comparison issue - I say that the real surprise
would be if you could take the milk of a totally different mammal (one not
noted for brain power, at that), modify it to the best of your
*commercially profitable* power but run no tests on the bioavailability or
longterm outcomes of those modifications, leave out perhaps 2/3 of the
ingredients known to be in the original, use it as the exclusive food of
someone who is still growing a brain, and expect an identical outcome. *Of
course* there's a difference!
On the other hand, one of the brightest people I know was raised on
evaporated milk and Karo syrup. That is a tribute not to the quality of
the formula - which was utterly lacking in some "essentials" now added and
bragged about by the companies - but to the adaptability of the human body
and the strong influence of environment. There's no doubt he would have
been brighter still, but the difference probably doesn't matter on an
individual level. On a national level, it's a public health disgrace. But
it shouldn't be a surprise.
