Prolactin production is actually increased by stress. ( Oxytocin is
interferred with by stress.) It is not uncommon to see milk production
following chest surgery or chest trauma. Perhaps this is a way to flush or
drain the lymphatic system of fluids built up because of edema. Regarding
the post-hysterectomy milk production, she may just be experiencing something
related to this stress-connection. Or she may have some sort of pituitary
tumor. The engorgement management measures you have suggested sound fine to
me, but continuation of symptoms should be looked at as just that: symptoms.
They should be evaluated in the context of what other conditions could cause
them. This really isn't a breastfeeding problem because she isn't
breastfeeding.
