Also in Spain some mothers are told not to go to the hairdresser during
pregnancy and lactation. I have just received a Spanish paper about
toxicology of cosmetic products; pregnancy and lactation are not even
mentioned:
"Toxicity of non-metalic hair dies is low, and mostly caused, by
paraphenylendiamine, related to aniline, a skin irritant; asthma, vertigo,
hypertension, metahemoglobinemia, convulsions and coma have been described,
even by cutaneous absorption." "Anyway, massive ingestion is rare, because
of amonnia contents, that produces vomit" "Metalic dies are more toxic: if
ingested, cadmium and cobalt salts can cause gastrointestinal problems,
headache, rarely hepatorenal damage and circulatory problems"
Toxicity by cutaneous absorption is, of course, extremely uncommon (have
you ever seen it? Millions of women have been exposed!). I would say
products licensed for use are reasonably safe (unless ingested by the
mother). In order to cause any problems to the baby, these produts should
have (in my opinion) toxic concentrations in mother's blood.
I think toxicity of hair dyes through milk is another myth; I would be glad
to receive any information about its origin.
