I had a very interesting experience with a second-time mom who was very
frustrated by inverted nipples (quit and bottledfed first baby). she
called when about four months pregnant and we discussed various ways to
overcome this problem the second time around.
She got information about using a syringe to draw out her nipples, and
did so for about eight weeks before her due date. When I saw her just
after her new daughter's birth, she laughingly informed me that her
brother had seen her at the beach and shouted at her on the shore, "Hey,
---! You've got nipples!"
Her nipples were indeed beautifully inverted, and the baby latched on
nicely. She rented a pump anyway -- she was convinced things just were
not working properly.
When she switched to yukkafeeding, she called and said, "Oh well -- at
least I won't have to pay for formula. My brother's the vice president
of ----------- (formula company)."
I was speechless.
But the syringe can help. (See JHL article -- I'm at school and don't
have reference.) Dawn Kersula, 2 weeks shy of a nursing degree
