I just opened up my morning paper and on the front page was an article
"Blacks more likely to get diabetes". It says (in part)

"Black Americans appear to have a genetic predisposition to iabetes that
may be triggered by obesity or other poor health habits-but simple lifestyle
changes could lower the risk, diabetes experts said Monday. Black Americans
are twice as likely as whites to get diabetes"

The American Diabetes Association unveiled it's new African-American
Program. It is a $500,000 educational campaign to prevent & control
diabetes and will emphasize weight loss and exercise.

The little box on the side lists ways to lessen the risk of diabetes and has
listed:
1. Exercise regularly.
2. Avoid fat in diet.
3. Avoid smoking.
4. Watch your weight.
5. Find out family history of diabetes.

Now all these are great and I'm sure the program is needed but wouldn't it
have been nice if they had mentioned that breastfeeding also decreases the
risk of diabetes. (Monte, W., Johnston, et al.: Bovine serum albumin
detected in infanut formula is a possible trigger for insulin-dependent
diabetes mellitus. J Amer Diet Assoc 1994; 94:314-16.)

Does anyone have an address, e-mail or snail mail, for the ADA?
