Dear Lactnetters,

I am working with a mom pregnant with second child and due in 8 weeks. She
has been on Pamelor since before becoming pregnant. OB says he wants her to
discontinue the drug during the last 5 weeks of pregnancy. The info from
her psychiatrist and OB is that Pamelor is not safe during BFing.

A few years ago, I attended a Bfing conference during which a psychiatrist
at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, assoc. with the Univ. of
Pittsburgh Medical Center, spoke. She had founded a program treating and
researching pre-, peri-, and postpartum depression. Much of her research
involved studying certain antidepressants and breastfeeding and effects on
baby, etc. At that time the one antidepressant her research had proven safe
in lactation was Pamelor. She has since left Pitt and I have no resource
person who really knows this field, as in on the cutting edge of the research.

Can anyone help me? Dr. Hale, perhaps? Can anyone give me the name of
anyone specializing in this field, because they are the most up to date on
the research. Does anyone possibly know the whereabouts of Kathy Wizner,
M.D.?

Please e-mail me if you think appropriate.

Thanks,

Debbie Campbell, RN, LLLL
