>><<I was told the local hospital was recommending playtex nurser bags for
storage.... Information from K.F's book says that they are intended for milk
storage and for freezing... they are made of polyethylene as are the inside
layers of the other major ones SO.....my question is.. why not?>><<

>>I second this question. Seems to me that making storage seem difficult or
expensive has far more potential for discouraing moms from BFing than
alchohol questions. If the Playtex bags are being sold for formula users,
does something leech into the formula, too? I suspect this is outdated
information... <<

Two thoughts on these questions. First, while the breastmilk storage bags are
made of the same materials, at least one has a nylon coating that makes it
less permeable to refrigeration/freezer smells and related "burning". As for
the leeching potential, I agree; it appears to be similar and I would love to
see this question addressed.

As for the question of relative risks of components leeching into the
milk..... I still feel that this is a valid issue, especially in the long
run. Moms using ABM are not storing the milk in the bags long term as are
breastfeeding mothers, and the very fact that polyethylene bags allow for
more changes in smell/taste in and out suggests that there is a permeability
that may allow for leeching of chemicals as well. Let's face it: less
permeable materials such as polypropylene and glass are less likely to be
leeching anything; I vote for rigid containers.
