Well, I am ***disgusted***. My husband works for Big Blue, (IBM), and today
we got a thing in the mail...IBM is collaborating with a company called
Work/Family Directions, and the program they tout is called LifeWorks. In
the PR, they tell us "Dear Fellow IBMer, (ack, I hate that term), At a time
when the number of dual-career couples, single parent households, and
families with elder care responsibilities is growing, balancing work and
personal life is becoming more challenging than ever for many
employees...etc. etc. etc.." Then, in the accompanying brochure, it states
"If you have kids, you have questions. For help in getting the answers, all
you have to do is call LIFEWORKS. Our experienced counselors will provide
you with advice, guidebooks, and checklists, and referrals to local
resources...Then comes the picture of the mother with a baby in arms...and
the quote "Every time my babysitter was sick, I missed work. Then my boss
suggested I call LifeWorks. The counselor helped me plan ahead for backup
child care." " Then it goes on to list what you can call them for :

"INFANTS-

(partial listing of topics-KB)

Call Lifeworks. We'll assist you in:

-Getting your baby to sleep through the night
-Finding and managing quality child care
-Feeding and nutrition

You see that some of these are helpful, but the one about getting babies to
sleep through the night just SLAYS me. I see that the myth of infant
sleeping through the night perpetuates itself..even through this type of
subtle programming.

Ack. I can't get away from it. It is in my own backyard. I just might have
to call them up and see what advice they give to a mother who wants to
return to work and continue breastfeeding. They say they have info on
nutrition...I wonder just how knowledgeable they are about breastpumps,
storage of human milk, etc. I am hoping they are knowledgeable, but let's
just say I am not betting my supper on it. I assure you they will know more
after my call.
