Diane,

Parts of me are boiling....they try and make things SO difficult! Clean is
clean. When Pat Bull and I did our (infamous?) study on storage of
breastmilk in room temp or in refrig, we used clean, NOT boiled, NOT sterile,
equipment for pumping and storage. We did this deliberately -- because all
the other literature we had come upon used sterile, and we didn't think that
reasonable for the working mother. So, we used clean. The results were that
bacterial growth were certainly within acceptable limits, there was no
significant difference at 10 hours between that stored at room temperature
(75 degrees) and that stored in the refrig, and that many of the samples had
less bacteria at 10 hours than it did upon immediate culture.

1987)

I think the instructions to boil everything, including the tubing, is a CYA
sort of thing. Though how you can boil the filter and still have a
functioning piece of equipment is beyond me. And that is part of
"everything," right?

Richard? Pat? Are you out there????

Jan B.
