Good Morning all!
Kathy D., you gave me some things to think about this morning regarding
thumb sucking. I was a LONG term thumb sucker ('till age 13 but only at
night!) and I have often wondered why. I knew that it made me feel better at
the time. I realize now why I sucked as long as I did. My mother tried to
BF me, but couldn't because I kept throwing up her milk (I suspect reflux or
milk allergy) and Drs told her to wean me and put me on ABM. I did worse on
ABM and almost died until I was put on Pr_ s_b__. As a result I had no
sucking time at breast and did not use a pacifier. Then my little sister was
born 8 days before my first b-day. According to my mom, I was so mad at her
for leaving me for several days while she was in the hospital I wouldn't
speak to her for a month! Then my folks got divorced, my mom remarried
twice, last step-father was abusive, we moved a lot, get the picture? My
life was far from stable! No wonder I sucked my thumb! Security!
That explains why neither of my boys suck/ed their thumbs. They are both
very secure, had/have as much time at breast as they need/want, and I have
done all in my power to keep things as stable as possible. With my older
son, that meant surviving on AFDC so I could raise him instead of letting
someone else raise him while I worked for minimum wage. As a result, I have
a very well adjusted 10 year old, (who BTW also refused bottles!) who is a
great big brother, and a great son!
I used to think that thumb/finger sucking was normal, now I am not so sure!
Thanks Kathy D.! This is not what I needed to start my week out with! :D
The last thing I need now is another theory to discuss with friends and look
into! :) I'm too busy as it is! <G>
Oh, well. That's what Lactnet is for! Give us something to think about!
Hope all had a wonderful Holiday! We did! <YUM!>
Will be posting results from Ribbon Color survey later today!
