Jeannette,
I hope some "experts" in working with these babies will reply. But I
wanted to alert you to the video from the ILCA conference session last July
in which Sandra Lang talks about cup feeding. There is a sequence showing
cup feeding of a baby with cleft lip, and discusses the mother's good
feeling about this feeding method helped until the repair was done. It was
Plenary Session G, "Cup-feeding in the Neonatal Unit." Conference tapes
are available through First Tape, 411 Harrison-Front, Oak Park, IL 60304
(708)386-0660,

LLL has a pamphlet on "Nursing a Baby with Cleft Lip or Palate," (#122),
and another is available through Childbirth Graphics, "Nursing Your Baby
with a Cleft Palate or Cleft Lip," by Sarah Coulter Danner and Edward
Cerutti. This has good photos of positioning options. (They are the ones
who devised the "Dancer hand " position, from the Dan and Cer in their
names.)
