I've used tea tree oil directly on my skin and my children's for several
years; I have especially found it useful against the virus which causes
canker sores in the mouth (used directly on canker sores, followed by
several minutes swishing with Stanford mouthwash, a prescription item).
I've also used it instead of one of the topical ointments such as
Bacitracin/Neomycin on minor skin injuries, and on minor burns (not right
away, but after they've been well cooled). Tea tree oil mouthwashes,
toothpastes, and dental floss are available at the store.

I don't know what the effect of ingestion would be on a newborn, however.
