I have noted with interest the recent posts concerning herbs and their
safety for breastfed infants. I asked my pharmacist if he had any
information and he didn't but gave me a brochure for the herbal
supplement company NaturalLife and it gave a telephone number for its
customer service dept: (801)489-1500. The pamphlet include the following
caution for dong quai root - "Caution: Do not use during menstrual
difficulties characterized by heavy flow or bloating." That is the only
supplement with a caution listed.
Penelope Ody's book Home Herbal (p. 126) has a recipe for increasing milk
flow and mentions cabbage leaves("washed and softened by beating with a
cooking mallet") for engorgement. Her sore nipple remedy is "calendula
cream or a little honey mixed with sweet almond oil". I thought honey
was associated with infant botulism along with karo syrup. Comments
appreciated. She has an extensive list to be avoided during pregnancy.
E-mail me if you are interested.
Did anyone hear a recent announcement concerning the dangers of drinking
sun tea that was not made with boiling water. There is risk of e. coli
in the tea. I wonder about e. coli risks if tea bags are used on sore
nipples if not steeped in boiling water first.
